Christmas Retreat


As seems to happen every holiday, we try to get holiday-specific content out before the day arrives, but we always miss a few. That doesn't mean you can't still enjoy it, or that it shouldn't be

posted. Better late than never, right? The map itself is only partially Christmasy. Personally I can see how people might want to use it throughout the winter season, especially those types who are too lazy to pull down their Christmas decorations until March. [i]You know who you are, slackers.[/i] The map consists of four areas: the bar, the spa and skating rink, the ski slopes, and the pool area. The pool area really gets me. It's cool, and comes complete with water slides, but... the author must think we're part of the Polar Bear club! :p In his read-me, the author notes that he had issues with the trees not showing textures, but one of his beta testers did not. I had the same problem the author did, so this led me to believe that it's not a texture error, but a possible shader conflict. Then I looked at the PK3 and realized there were no shaders, so I'm a bit baffled. Definitely something to look into for the next version. I found the texturing to be a little redundant in areas, especially in the bar where the lighting actually seemed to be rather poor. I must say it's the most well-lit bar I've ever seen! The fireplace in the bar, however, is nice, and while the furniture is rather square it does still look cozy. I didn't notice any really big technical problems, though I did find navigating the map to be a little difficult at times, especially getting out of the pools/hottubs, and getting up to the water slides. It took me almost five minutes to realize there was no button for the lift, and you had to actually activate the [i]lift itself[/i]. Then again, I'm a little dense sometimes. Ah yes, and a note to the author: I looked at your music, and noticed a few things. First of all, it's sampled at 8000hz. This is probably the reason it's not working (check the tutorials thread on the forum for more information about sound/music requirements). Also, I'd recommend using MP3s. They save space. There's no sense in having a 3mb WAV in your PK3 when you could convert it to a 1mb (or less) MP3. Again, sorry for the delay in posting, however I'd still recommend people check it out. Even though it's past Christmas, and the map has a few problems, I still found it to be entertaining and I imagine it'd be fun to chill out in, and perhaps have some casual fighting/dueling.
